Hubbell discovered that galaxies twice as far as other galaxies are moving at twice the speed away from eachother, and 3 times as far at three times the speed. This implies that not only is the universe expanding, it is accelerating. Calculating the rate of expansion led to the determination of when the big bang happened, 12.7 billion years ago.

  • It took place everywhere, as the universe was very tiny before
  • Planck units can be used to describe the very short time immediately following the big bang

A nuclear explosion converts a small amount of matter into a large amount of energy. The BB was the reverse of this
