Good Eats Gold Cake

This is a great, simple cake. Can be turned in to a lot of other cakes.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup butter flavored shortening
  • 1.25 cups sugar
  • 2.5 cups cake flour
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 8 egg yolks, beaten
  • 3/4 cups milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp lemon zest

Prep

  • Preheat to 350
  • Sift baking powder and flour
  • Grease two 9" pans

Process

  • Stir shortening on low for 1 minute
    • Add sugar, up to medium and stir for 4 minutes
    • Add eggs 1 at a time
    • Alternate adding the rest of the dry and wet ingredients

Evenly add to pans

  • Bake for 18-20 minutes
  • Cool in pan 15 minutes, then completely on rack

Modifications
