Martha Stewart Recipe

Prep

  • Preheat Oven to 350
  • Butter and flour two cake pans, add parchment round to bottom, lightly spray with Pam

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups cake flour, not self-rising
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups canola oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons white vinegar

Process

  • Whisk flour, salt, cocoa
  • In mixer, combine sugar and oil
  • Add eggs one at a time, beating well on medium
  • add food coloring and vanilla
  • Turn mixer down and add flour mixture, alternating with buttermilk, scraping as needed
  • Combine baking soda + vinegar in small bowl, stir, add to cake batter and stir 10 seconds
  • Put in cake pans and bake for 30-35 minutes until a toothpick is not quite clean
  • Cool on rack in pans 5 minutes
  • Turn out on to rack, cool completely

Frosting

Needs at least 24 oz butter and cheese total. Cream_cheese_frosting
